TPS92390: the best string configuration

Part Number: TPS92390
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS92360

Hi

I'm going to drive a white LEDs combination of 14 strings, 3LEDs per string

All 14 strings must be connected together as below drawing

Each string current is 3-4mA maximum, for a total of 42mA-56mA  , expected voltage for each LED is 3V

Need your advice on the best string configuration - 1,2,3 or 4 channels for my design using TI TPS92390 component  to have he best current accuracy

Also, I didn't see a temperature stability graphs to be sure the lighting is stable in temperature

  • Hi Yoni,

You can use one channel to get better current accuracy. We also have single channel device, such as TPS92360, but its current accuracy maybe not so good.

So these LED string is used for what? What current accuracy is acceptable?

    BR,

    Robin

  • Thanks Robin

    1. The TPS92360 required an external PWM for its operation, the only PWM in my product is in another board and I will need to route it through       a large Mother-Board. Since my product is extremely noise sensitive  I can't use this solution

    2. My understanding is that the external PWM is not necessary for the TPS92390 operation, as I can control LED brightness using  DISP_BRT        register using the I2C interface instead, please confirm

    3. Since my current requirement is small  ~50mA  and the one string configuration  in which all device outputs are connected together provide
at least 4x30mA using RISET=104Kohm ( Data sheet page 22: "For high accuracy of LED current, the ILED current is recommended to set in
range from 30 mA to 200 mA. So the RISET value is in the range from 15.6 kΩ to 104 kΩ.")

How can I prevent providing this excessive current  (120mA) immediately after power on, before I2C setting of register  LEDx_CURRENT[11:0] registers to the correct value?

Didn't see a way to disable the boost till setting the registers

  • Hi Yoni,

Understand. Yes, TPS92360 can control brightness without PWM signal.

I'm confused that why you need all four channels? You can leave the other three channels floating. Do I have any misunderstanding?

    BR,

    Robin

  • Hi Robin

No, I don't need the other 3 channels

So, I can select the one channel configuration (red circled below) and leave the other three channels floating ?

What about my second question (item 3) ?

  • Please keep following this case

  • Hi Yoni,

Yes. The current sink of each channel is disable when power on and enable after receiving I2C commands.

    BR,

    Robin
