TPS22966: Why is Iout of non-automotive version higher than Q1 version

Hi Team,

Good day! 

One of my customers is using our TPS22966 on their designs and are looking at qualifying our Q1 version as an alternative to support their supply needs now. They noticed though that the Q1 version has a lower max current vs the non-Q1 version at 4A vs 6A respectively. Any reason why the output current is lower for the Q1 version? I see they have the same specs and same Rds on, but different Iout rating,

    Hi Alfred,

    To be automotive rated, the device has to undergo a different set of tests and has to be rated to different junction temperature ranges.

    As such, the ratings of the automotive variant and the non-auto variant are different.

    Hi Shreyas,

    Thanks for the feedback! This is noted. Is that why also the slew rate is also different? Even if the TPS22966 and TPS22966-Q1 have the same Slew Rate equation? Our customer also noticed that the Rise Time value is not close to one another. For example, at Vin=Von=Vbias=5V the difference is about 200us (TPS22966=1720us, TPS22966-Q1=1991us).

    Hi Alfred,

    Yes, the different ratings are downstream effect of what is mentioned above.

    In most non-automotive cases for currents less than 4A, you can replace a non-Q1 device with a Q1 device. You may see some shift in performance but the system should still work. If this is acceptable then the Q1 and non Q1 versions can be used interchangeably. We do not recommend using a non-Q1 device in an automotive application.
