Could you help pick up suitable solution for charger application

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25792, TPS63060, TPS63070

Hi team,

My customer wants to design for Super Cap charger

Vin=5V@2A(max) VO=14.4V Io=0.7A(or less 0.7A). due to Iin limitation.

Does TI have a suitable solution for this spec? or any discrete circuit to achieve the design? thanks!

  • Hi Jimmy,

    TI does not have a single IC standalone, boosting super-cap charger solution.  The BQ25792 buck-boost charger would work but requires host control and has trickle and pre-charge which until the cap voltage is high enough, which extends charge time.  If your super cap does not require trickle/pre charge (most do not) and since your charge current seems flexible, I recommend using a boost converter running in current limit.  I have move this post to the boost converter team.

    Regards,

    Jeff

  • Hello Jimmy,

    Have a look at this app note https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slva676/slva676.pdf

    You could replace TPS63060 with TPS63070 for a somewhat higher voltage level.

    Best regards,
