battery gauge and protection IC

Hi TI expert,

In our project, we are using a 12.6 volt ,20Ah Li-ion battery pack for back up power supply and using BQ25792 IC as the battery charger.

Presently we need an IC used for both battery gauging(for the estimation of SOC,life cycles used) and Battery protection (over discharge current protection).please suggest a suitable IC doing the mentioned requirements and also supports I2C Communication.

Hi Muhammed,

I think the BQ40Z50-R1 is the device that will meet the needs you describe. It has an SMBus communication interface which is very similar to I2C.

Hi Muhammed,

There is no device with I2C that has all of the equivalent functions of the BQ40Z50-R1. Here is a table of the available gauges for the number of cells you are using. The BQ30Z100-G1 uses I2C, but it does not have the protection features.

Yes, it should be possible. But I do not have direct experience using Beaglebone Black with SMBus. You may want to check forums like Github for Beaglebone SMBus examples.
