TPS55340: Heating Issue

Dear Sir,

I have designed TPS55340 Based BOOST Converter with Vin as 12V and Vout as 35V with a switching frequency of 600kHz. I found that IC was getting heated up when I tried to draw 1A output. Is there any means to resolve the heating issue or is there any design improvement or design flaw that I have done ?. Kindly guide me on the above scenario. My actual requirement is to charge an 8S Li-ion battery with a 12V charger. Hence I have to boost 35V and charge at 1.5A. Kindly suggest if any other alternate solution is available.

Hi Praveen,

The heating of the IC occurs because of the internal MOSFET. The rating of the internal MOSFET is limited as a function of the output current. If you check the TPS55340 Boost calculator , you will find that the maximum output current is quite close to your maximum 1.5A limit. I would recommend using a boost controller, such as the LM5155, which you can use with an external MOSFET to generate your 35V rail.

Thank you for the reply. I have understood my issue and started working on external MOS based Boost controller. I would suggest TI to come up with 8S and Higher Li-ion Charger IC.
