BQ40Z50-R1: Accumulated discharge capacity reset at shutdown

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R1

Hi Everyone.

The battery I designed enters shutdown every time it disconnects from load. It was an our customer demand.

I noticed that if I disconnect it before accumulated discharge capacity needed for cycle counter increment is reached the accumulated discharge capacity is reset.

It means cycle count doesn't increase even after long use of battery (many chargers and discharges).

Is there a way to activate shutdown without lost of accumulated discharge capacity?

  • Hello Maxim,

Can you specify what you mean by shutdown? Is it a complete loss of power to the gauge? The gauge has flash and RAM, it may be getting cleared if the gauge completely losses power, this is not the recommend operation for the gauge.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • Hello. By shutdown I mean Time Based Shutdown (para 5.4.3 of the technical reference SLUUBC1D).

I use it every time battery is disconnected from a load.

  • Maxim,

Shutdown means total loss of RAM contents. The best option here would be to lower the 90% criteria in increase the cycle counter so that you see it count prior to the shutdown event.

Also, This is a very not normal request. Removing the battery pack should clear the PRES pin which will disable the FETS. I do not see a use case where shutdown is needed for every removal. This will greatly impact almost all aspects of the gauge (Lifetime, QMax, Ra...ect). this is HIGHLY not recommended for gauge performance.

    Thanks,
