TPS65218D0: boot up setting and programming

Part Number: TPS65218D0
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS6521815, TPS65218, USB2ANY, IPG-UI

Hi Team,

My customer is interested in TPS65218D0 as Zynq-7000 power supply. Then I got some question regarding EEPROM programing yesterday. could you help me to answer their questions.

1. In my understanding,  TPS65218D0 has EEROM and setting are stored in the ROM and booting up with the setting when power applying. Is this understanding correct?

2. Could you tell me how TPS65218D0 behaves at default condition. My customer is concerning FPGA get damage due to output of TPS65218D0's default condition before writing the settings]

3. How many times we can change the EEPROM settings? are there any restrictions on re-writing?

4. Could you tell me which tool we can utilize for EEPROM programing?

Regards,

Takashi Onawa

  • Hello,

I have forwarded your request to the application engineer supporting this device. Since we had US holiday on  this Monday, there may be 1-2 days delay in providing the feedback.

  • Hi,

    To answer your questions below,

    1. The TPS65218D0 has a EEPROM which the PMIC will use to pull the default voltage and sequencing, etc settings from.
    2. You can find the default register settings for the TPS65218D0 in Section 5.6 of the datasheet. There is also the TPS6521815 variant of this device (part of the same TPS65218xx family) that comes with a blank EEPROM and the customer can choose to program this device with whatever voltage/sequencing settings they choose.
    3. This PMIC is able to be programmed up to 1000x. (See Section 5.5 of the datasheet)
    4. We have a Boosterpack available for the TPS65218, which can be found here. They can reference the User's Guide along with the boosterpack for instructions on programming TPS65218 ICs.

    Best,
    Emily

  • Hi Emily-san,

Thanks for your prompt response on this.

OK, I understood the programing process and EEPROM's tolerant. Also I recommend them to use TPS6521815 for this opportunity.

Sorry one quick question, could you tell me how TPS65218 behaves in the programming period?

My customer would like to program the EEPROM on board with some custom harness and the writing tool, not pre-programing before board assy.

So I need to provide clearly answer about TPS65218's output voltage level. Are all output disable right?

    Regards,

    Takashi Onawa

  • Takashi-san,

You can find the output voltage levels in the Registers section of the datasheet. All of the voltages are programmed as the lowest possible voltage settings, but you can find in registers SEQ3-7 that none of the rails are actually programmed to be connected to the sequencer (so the outputs will not be enabled)

    Best,
    Emily

  • hi Emily-san,

    OK, I understood

My customer plan to populate the device before writing the EEPROM though, Does IPG-UI work with simple USB2ANY?

  • Takashi-san,

Yes, you can find additional information and software for the IPG-UI at the following link
