DCDC layout recommendation

Genius 11380 points

Hi Team

Does any requirement for DCDC output trace width from inductors to output capacitor must be the same? for example, our circuit used 7x7mm inductor and 0402 MLCC on output, of course 7x7mm pad width bigger than 0402 pad, should I route the copper width with exactly current requirement start from inductor, like 3A, 120mil/1oz copper, or don't care about trace width between inductor and output capacitor, concern the trace start from output capacitor?

Best Regards,
William

  • Hello William,

A good practice would be to use 45 degree angles at the output cap to get the trace as wide as needed to connect to the inductor. Please make sure that you do not forget to layout the GND connections as well short and wide. Try to keep the high currents on one side of the board and the loops that show changing currents especially as short as possible. For a boost this is the output side, for a buck this is the input side and for a buck-boost this is input and output side.

    Best regards,
    Brigitte
