BQ79616-Q1: multiple adjacent cell balancing with external mosfets

Hi,

looking at the following image and imaging that I want to balance two adjacent channels, it seems that if I try to do that, then the upper channel cannot turn on the external mosfet so the balancing phase cannot start in the upper channel. This is due to the current path that does not generate a voltage drop on the intermediate Rbias resistor so it does not turn on the upper mosfet. In other terms a whole "blue" current flows in the following path:

If I try to balance multiple adjacent channels the assumptions get more complicated.

  1. Are my assumption correct? 
  2. Which is the best way to balance adjacent cells? I have to use them in an alternating mode?

    The external balancing circuit enable would depend on the components/FET you choose. Internally, the FETs can only support enabling two adjacent and only up to 8 total channels at one time. Otherwise you can just alternate all 8 even or odd which I suggest as the easier method since it will work out to be the same amount of balance time either way. Enabling these will just act as the switch for your external FETs to turn on.
