"Overdriving" PTH08T230W

PTH08T260W is rated 3A.  It can handle it at 85°C with convection only.

Its overcurrent threshold is 5.5A (typical, no min nor max stated).

We would load this module with up to 3.5A.  I suspect no problem at 40°C but I can't extrapolate any derating for high operating temperatures.  We could go as high as 70°C.

Do you have any data on this use case?

  • Sorry, I have made a mistake in the title.  It should have been "Overdriving PTH08T260W"

  • PTH08T260W current limit  is 3.0Amps. Any current above the 3.0 Amp limit plus increased temperature can force the  converter into hiccup mode for over current operation. 

    The  suggestion is to  change to the PTH08T230W  , which is a 6 Amp  pin for pin capable version . The one change required to the PTH08T230W is to increase the ceramic output capacitance to 200UF from 100uf.

    Note it was not indicated whether this operating temperature was in  :

     Natural convection temperature is in a enclosed case with no  air flow .

    Or exposed lead frame with air flow.

    In either case, the current is limited by temperature to no more  than  3.0Amps continuous.
