LM5164-Q1: Pulse Skipping in CCM Mode

Part Number: LM5164-Q1

Hey Team,

I am looking into an applications using the LM5164-Q1 with a typical output current of 250mA - 400mA. With this output current, we have calculated that a large inductor will be needed  to achieve CCM - Something like 220uH.

We would prefer to use a lower inductance and so we are assuming that it will operate in pulse skipping mode (if half of ripple current > load current) with frequency defined by Rron. We are thinking that we will need to add a snubber to attenuate the ringing.

  1. Does this operation summary sound correct?
  2. Could you help me to understand what the negative side effects might be if operating in this mode?

Best,
Dajon McGill

  • Hello

Can  you tell me what your input and output voltage, and frequency will be??

In general you should be able to run in DCM.  The ringing should not cause any trouble; unless you have some

    special requirements.

Please use Webench to design your application and we can review it and determine if a smaller inductor can

    be used.

    Thanks
