BQ40Z50-R1: BQ40Z50R1 SMBUS Communication issue

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: EV2400, BQSTUDIO

Hello:

I use a BQ40Z50R1 fuel gage chip in my product. I see 2 issues with the SMBus communications with the gage.

1. The gage takes >1hr to come out of ship mode.

2. When it's out of ship mode, I can sense the pack voltage and can charge/discharge the pack without issues. But I cannot get BQ studio to connect to the gage. I have used the same setup to talk successfully to other gages without issues. So I know the hardware & connections are not the issue.

Please see the image below of the bit map and the registers I see of the packs that have the SMB issues.

I am using a EV-2400 module with Firmware version 0.28, and have BQ studio version 1.3.101.

The gages were communicating without issues prior to going into ship mode.

I am concluding that the BQ40Z50R1 gage might have SMBus communication issues when coming out of ship mode. Is that a known problem? If so, is there a way to reset the SMBus comms?

Pls let me know.

  • Hi Bhaskar,

Can you include the communication sidebar on the left in the BQStudio image? If you have auto-refresh on that could interfere with SMBus communication. Do you also have a logic analyzer capture? That would let you know what is actually being sent between BQStudio and the gauge. Also you may want to update the EV2400 firmware to version 0.32.
