TPS4H160-Q1: Pulsed Current capability of body diode during short to battery

Part Number: TPS4H160-Q1

Team,

Looking at the TPS4H160 datasheet it appears that the body diode of the switch can handle 2.5A up to 60s when in a short to battery condition.

Could you share any data for how much current could be handled for 1ms?

Specifically we're trying to understand if 30A-40A could be handled for 1ms.

Best,

David

  • Hi David,

We do not spec this or test this and so we do not have data to share. The body diode path is not meant to handle high current since it's forward voltage will result in high power loss. Still, let us assume the forward voltage is 1V this is putting 30W to 40W through the device for 1mS.

2.5W over 60seconds (assuming the system is the same) is 150J. Back of the envelop calculations state that a 40W load should max out 3.75 seconds.

This calculation is for design reference only. I believe the best way to get data is to test this on an EVM.

    Thanks,
