PTD08A010W: what is the maximum recommended temperature as measured by TEMP output?

Part Number: PTD08A010W
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PTD08D210W, UCD7242, PTD08A020W, UCD7230

This question applies to the following Digital Powertrain modules:

PTD08A010W

PTD08D020W

PTD08D210W

All three of these modules specify a maximum operating temperature of 85C. All three have analog temperature sense outputs.

The PTD08D210W datasheet refers to the temperature being transduced as a "Junction temperature". This analog output reads up to 125C. The other modules do not specify where this temperature is read from.

Can I assume that the maximum specified temperature (85C) is an ambient temperature and not a junction temperature?

If this is the case, then what is the maximum recommended junction temperature (or temperature as read out on the TEMP or TSense pin) for these modules?

Best regards,

Eamon Egan

  • Hello Eamon,

Yes, the 85 degrees C is referring to the ambient temperature.

Unfortunately, I do not have any data regarding a safe temperature reading maximum value.
Instead, we have Safe Operating Area (SOA) curves published in the data-sheets.

    PTD08D210W uses the UCD7242 MOSFET/driver IC with TJ max of 125 C.
I would recommend to set the max temperature reading to less than 115C (125 - 10C temp reading accuracy).

  • Hello Yitzhak, and thanks for your reply.

With regard to the other two modules I'm asking about (PTD08A010W, PTD08D020W), is the signal output on their temperature sense lines also the junction temperature from their driver ICs?

And, would you be able to tell me which driver parts are used in these modules? (and whether they also have a 125C TJmax - although I could look this up myself).

    Thanks,

    Eamon Egan

  • Hello Eamon,

PTD08A010W and PTD08A020W use UCD7230, with Tj max of 150C.
And yes, all these modules use diodes for temperature measurement.
