Our application is drawing about 500mA/channel nominally through the device. A 20k current limit set resistor was chosen by default because the current limit feature is not needed (taken care of by other parts of the design). In testing we found that a downstream device (an external third party radio modem) draws a significant current spike (~ 3.5A peak and 50-100usec. in duration) as it powers up. The POL that supplies the modem, current limits at 1A but has a slow enough response that it is not being triggered by the spike. However, the TPS2561 does respond and folds back current which drops the output voltage and keeps the modem in its high current state.
We've disabled the current limit feature by shorting ILIM to ground and after significant testing, the TPS2561 does not appear to be damaged by the over-current spike. We've also wondered if a capacitor in parallel with 20k ohm Rlim would allow the spike to pass without triggering the current limit.
Obviously, my question is: Is any of this kosher?
