TPS62290: we use TSP62290 in our design

Part Number: TPS62290

Hi,

Good Day. I have a customer who is working with TPS62290. Please see below his query for your reference. Thank you very much.

our application needs around 100mA of load current in maximum

so i calculated the inductor value, it was around 17 micro henry

but in datasheet it is recommended to use 2.5 to 4.7 micro henry

our assumption is high inductance will not affect the operation

can you advice regarding this

Best Regards,

Ray Vincent

  • Hi Vincent,

In general, when you calculate the inductor value, you must consider the maximum Iout of the device and not the maximum Iout of the application. The TPS6229x is designed to operate with inductors in the range of 1.5 μH to 4.7 μH and with output capacitors in the range of 4.7 μF to 22 μF.

If you recalculate with max Iout 1A, you will get a smaller value of inductor. I suggest to follow the datasheet recommendations, otherwise it will affect the stability of the feedback loop.

  • Hi Febin,

Good Day. Please see another query of the customer. Thank you very much.

Can u tell me, what type of issues might come if i use larger inductor value ??
Because for the suggested inductor value, the current (for less than 50 mA) will get into discontinuous mode,
can you elaborate what kind of drawbacks will be in the performance ?
even if you share any document or seminars it'll be great.

  • Hi Ray,

In this case, would you be interested in one of our Forced PWM devices, so that even during light load conditions it will remain in PWM mode.

In general, the output filter design is very critical for the proper functioning of the device. Datasheets often give a range of recommended inductor values. If this is the case, choose an inductor from this range. Incorrect design may lead to instability of the feedback loop and the device with not be able to regulate the output voltage.

    I hope this helps.
