TPS23730: Power Dissipation

Hi team,

My customer wants to know how to calculate the power dissipation of TPS23730,

The power dissipated by the IC will be the power at the pass FET (IRTN*IRTN*RDSon) and the power to drive the gate of the switching FET (VCC*ICC)

but I am not sure the value if IRTN and ICC, Could you give me an example?

Hello Jason,

We can use Irun in the datasheet pg 8 = 2mA.

IRTN is the current through the pass FET -- from RTN to VSS. Therefore it is essentially the input current. We calculate this through input power / input voltage. Assuming maximum power for TPS23730 = 51W and worst case scenario for input voltage is 37V (37V-57V input range) then maximum IRTN (and thus maximum power dissipation) = ~1.378A.

Hi Pahl,

Does you mean, the power dissipation should be 1.378^2 * Rdson?
If I have high side and low side, I should * 2?

Hey Jason,

Yes.

If there are two PD's and they are both dissipating power then yes you would multiply times 2.

Hi Pahl,

Does I need to consider the Clamp MOSFET or I just need to consider the main MOSFET.

if you are calculating power loss, the clamp mosfet contributes to this.
