TLV767: Operation with long-term short circuit

Part Number: TLV767

I am evaluating the TLV767 in an application where the output will be accessible to the user, and there is the possibility that there could be a short circuit on the output that remains in place indefinitely.  This will cause the regulator to heat up.  I know that the TLV767 has a thermal shutdown so it will cycle between the shutdown and reset temperatures.  The question is, is the TLV767 designed to survive this situation indefinitely?  Or will the part eventually fail, despite the thermal protection features?

If this situation will eventually lead to failure, can you recommend a similar regulator that can better handle an output short circuit?  Perhaps a hiccup mode, or something that does not result in the part hitting thermal shutdown despite the short?  If that is not possible, perhaps a recommendation for how to handle this situation with some additional circuitry that will prevent the TLV767 from hitting thermal shutdown?

  • Hello,

Just to clarify, even if the part is operated at recommended conditions, we do not guarantee that the device will survive indefinitely. This device is qualified as per JEDEC standard JESD22-A108 which indicates that the IC will run for ~9 years when operated at a junction temperature of 55C. If operated at a higher junction temperature, the lifetime of the part reduces. This part is designed to survive multiple continuous cycles of Current Limit-Thermal Shutdown-Reset Temperature-Current-limit over time. However this could age the part relatively sooner (depending on the power dissipated), since it will be operating at a higher average Junction temperature. We unfortunately do not have devices with hiccup mode protection designed into them. Hope this was of help, let us know if you have more questions. Thanks!
