I am evaluating the TLV767 in an application where the output will be accessible to the user, and there is the possibility that there could be a short circuit on the output that remains in place indefinitely. This will cause the regulator to heat up. I know that the TLV767 has a thermal shutdown so it will cycle between the shutdown and reset temperatures. The question is, is the TLV767 designed to survive this situation indefinitely? Or will the part eventually fail, despite the thermal protection features?
If this situation will eventually lead to failure, can you recommend a similar regulator that can better handle an output short circuit? Perhaps a hiccup mode, or something that does not result in the part hitting thermal shutdown despite the short? If that is not possible, perhaps a recommendation for how to handle this situation with some additional circuitry that will prevent the TLV767 from hitting thermal shutdown?
