TPS61220 - Vin > Vout

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61222, TPS61220

Hello,

Sorry for my intruding, don`t want to create new thread. Could you tell me what will become if the voltage on Vin pin of tps61222 will grow up to 5v (USB power). Will tps61222 stop switching and pass-through 5v directly to load or it disconnect the load from Vin or maybe something else?

Sorry for my English,

Best regards

  • Anton,

This needs to be a new thread as it is a separate question.

The TPS61220 cannot disconnect Vout from Vin.  There is a diode between SW and Vout that is always present, even when the IC is off.  As Vin is increased close to Vout, the IC will switch less often as less energy needs to be transferred to keep the output regulated.  The IC will stop switching when the drop across the diode still provides a Vout that is equal to or greater than the setpoint at the particular load current.

While Vin is close to Vout, there may be increased output voltage ripple due to the mix of switching and diode conduction.  Normal operation for a boost converter is Vin < Vout.

  • Hello Chris,

Thanks for reply and create new thread. Now it`s clear for me about tps61222,

    Best regards
