TPSM82821: Maximum output capacitor value

Part Number: TPSM82821

Hi Team,

Our customer is looking for an alternative device to Enpirion/Intel EP5368QI. The TPSM82821 seems fit for their requirements, however, they would like to confirm if using 50uF capacitor will affect the performance of the device. The maximum recommended output capacitance for TPSM82821 in the datasheet is 47uF. Will there be start-up problems or other issues?

According to our customer, in some cases they use the EP5368QI to supply cores of FPGAs and the total capacitance is higher than 50uF (they have designs with 50uF &125uF).

Danilo

  • Hi Danilo,

It is recommended to use only upto 47uF Output Capacitor. Beyond this value it could degrade the loop stability of the converter. However, you can verify this on the actual system by performing a bode plot measurement. If the phase margin is ≥ 45 deg, the control loop is stable even with minor Lout, Cout, and IC variations. I expect that 50uF will not be a problem but 125uF may cause stability issues.

Additionally, a feedforward capacitor will also improve load transients.

    I hope this helps!
