BQ40Z50-R2: Question about Battery Mode

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: GPCCHEM, BQ34Z100-G1

Hello team,

My customer asked a question about whether BQ40Z50-R2 supports dual battery system.

According to Technical Reference Manual, there is a Primary Battery Support bit on 0x03 BatteryMode register. However, it seems that only supports Read, so this function is not supported. Can you please confirm it?

Best Regards,

Austin

  • Hello Austin,

Can you clarify what type of 2 battery system? Are they wanting to gauge 2 different battery packs?

If that's the case they will need to have 2 separate golden images that will need to be uploaded to the gauge depending on the battery being used.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • Hi Wyatt,

Please refer below picture. Buck-boost DC/DC will charge and discharge 2 different battery pack.

I'm not fully understanding 2 separate golden images. Can you explain more detail? I do not have much experience of this. And also I'm wondering that BQ40Z50-R2 support below 4S2P management or any other device does.

    Best Regards,

    Austin

  • Hello Austin,

The gauge needs to have the correct chem ID uploaded (you can use GPCCHEM tool) and a learning cycle done to gauge accurately.

If the battery packs have cell connections so it's a true 4S2P pack, then you could use one gauge. If the top of stack is the only thing connected you will need to use 2 BQ40Z50s. Or you can do only gauging (no protections) with the BQ34Z100-G1.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • Hi Wyatt,

The customer will use 2 BQ40Z50s for each battery pack. One concerning point is that buck-boost DC/DC charge / discharge both battery packs so that the current could flow into the battery pack from the other pack in some conditions. The customer want to control the battery packs to enable / disable to prevent this issue. This is why the customer want to use PBS function.

So, to make sure this, we can change the default value of the device thru the tool and use this PB function. Is this right?

  • Hello Austin,

I'm not sure what default value that will be changed, if their system can switch between the two packs for charge and discharge I don't think there is an issue from a gauge perspective.

The PBS and PB bits are just used as indicators for the host system to tell which is the primary pack. All the controls will need to be implemented by the host.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller
