TPS736: Is TPS736 a metal change version of TPS731?

Hello guys,

One of my customers was going to use TPS73115 for their new product mass-productions.

But they knew it was difficult to prepare the device by their due date because TPS73115 lead time is too long.

So they decided to use TPS73615 instead of TPS73115 because the device lead time is very short.

At this moment, they have several questions as the follows.

They want to understand that TPS73615 is almost same device as TPS73115

because they want to know it is no problem to replace TPS73115 to TPS73615 through your replies.

Could you please give me your reply for them?

Q1. Is the different point between TPS73615 and TPS73115 the current limit circuit only ?

Q2. Are other circuits same between these devices?

Q3. In the device final test, is the current limit function tested with each device spec value?

Q4. When TPS73615 is used around 100mA on the lower limit side, are the device characteristics same as TPS73115?

    Q1, Q2: TPS736 and TPS731 use the same die. The only difference is the current limit circuit. 

    Q3: Yes, that is true.

    Q4: Both devices are specified to +/- 1% output voltage accuracy over all operating conditions, and since the range of operating conditions for TPS736 is wider than for TPS731, I would expect that the average device would have tighter output voltage accuracy tolerance for TPS736 than for TPS731 at lower output current. I don't think we could definitively say that the same is true for dropout voltage because it is possible that an outlier part that meets the maximum dropout specification at final test for the TPS736 would fail the TPS731 maximum dropout specification, but this is an unlikely scenario. If there is sufficient headroom then this is not an issue anyways. The same can be said of the load regulation specification, but again this is a very unlikely scenario.

    In summary, the electrical characteristics of both devices will be nearly identical at 100mA load current, but there is a very small chance that some TPS736 devices may be slightly out of spec. I would consider the risk involved to be very low using TPS736 in place of TPS731.
