BQ24170: Li-Ion Battery Charger advice needed

Hi everyone,

I am currently designing a Li-Ion battery charger to power a Raspberry Pi 4. I will be needing to use a 3.7 V 4500mAh ~ 5000mAh battery. I am not very familiar with power electronics and battery management, however, after some research I know I am in need of a battery charger IC (switching charger, since the high current), a battery fuel gauge, and a boost converter to deliver 5V and 3A to power the RPI4. 

I am not sure what I need to take into account when selecting charger, fuel gauge, and boost converter. So knowing the battery that I need to use, does anyone have suggestions about which components I could use? I was looking into the BQ24170, but I am very unsure.

    • What input voltage are you using to charge the battery?
    • How much charge current do you want?
    • Do you want a host controlled (I2C/SMBus) or standalone charger?
    • Do you want an integrated charger or a charge controller?
    • Do you want cold/hot TS temp charging or JEITA?
    • Do you want a powerpath or non powerpath device?
    • Do you want termination current or not?

      • it would be ideal if the battery charger could have a 5V input, as I would like to use a usb adapter.
    • How much charge current do you want?
      • the standard charge current is 2.5A according to the data sheet, that would be around a 2 hour charge time which would be okay with this application. with max charge current of 4.5A
    • Do you want a host controlled (I2C/SMBus) or standalone charger?
      • I2C would be ideal, I want a microcontroller (the raspberrypi4) to have the battery capacity data, etc. A standalone charger is also okay. 
    • Do you want an integrated charger or a charge controller?
      • I am not sure what the difference between these two are. I want to put all of these components on a PCB board so I am assuming an integrated charger is the what I need. 
    • Do you want cold/hot TS temp charging or JEITA?
      • does not matter
    • Do you want a powerpath or non powerpath device?
      • powerpath is ideal, but not required
    • Do you want termination current or not?
      • yes
