LM3406: Is there a better option to drive a simple 3x3 white LED array?

Part Number: LM3406
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS92515, LM3405, LM3409

Hello,

I have a customer looking for a recommendation to drive a simple 3x3 white LED array.  I did not find a lot of information on ti.com regarding how to drive basic white LED arrays.

Requirements:  Vin is from a battery with nominal 12v, up to 15v.  Vout is 7-8V @ 120mA-200mA.  No dimming or anything special.  Just on and off.

Power consumption is a careabout as well as cost and availability.  Would a simple DC/DC buck work or is there something else that needs to be considered?  I saw the LM3406, but wasn't sure this would work and/or overkill.

Open to any/all recommendations.

Thanks,

Tom

  • Hello,

LM3406 is probably more than needed.  Look at the LM3405 (15V maximum may limit used of this part though abs max is 20V.  You'll have to generate the boost voltage with Figure 14 of the datasheet or some other method), TPS92515 (simple part to use not easy to find right now), LM3409 (another easy to use part, uses external P-channel MOSFET).

    Best Regards,
