BQ34Z100-G1: and Low-Side FETs

Part Number: BQ34Z100-G1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ34Z100, BQ28Z610,

Dear TI-Team,

Is it possible to use the BQ34z100 together with Li-ion Battery Protection IC out of the ABLIC S-8252 or RICOH R-5460 families which use LOW-Side FETs? If so, is there an application node or a reference design for this?

Here some screen shots out of the datasheets of the three parts:

The point, that we don't go with fuel gauge with integrated protector like the BQ28z610 is, that our customer asked us to keep the protector separate from the fuel gauge and preferably keep a part which is not programable as protector.

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Yours Tobias

  • Hello Tobias,

Yes you can use the protectors with the BQ34Z100-G1. The gauge should be before the protector so it doesn't lose power if the protection is enabled. Gauging issues can occur if the protection is enabled and the gauge is powered off.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • Hello Wyatt,

thank you very much for you fast reply. That are good news for us that we can use this combination. The only problem I see is that out of the battery pack only three wires for Pack +, Pack - and HQD are planned. This would probably mean, that no communication with the BQ is possible if the protection is enabled and the negative connection between the cells and the outside is interrupted or am I missing a possibility to read out the BQ in this error state if there are only the three wires to the outside?

     Yours,

    Tobias

  • Hello Tobias,

It doesn't matter if communication is lost, I would try to avoid disabling the gauge by placing it before the protector so it's the only device on the stack if the protection is enabled.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller
