BQ79616-Q1: Single PCBA for multi cell configuration

Hi TI team,

We are planning to use single PCB and assembly to support multiple cell configurations like 8S, 12S, 14S etc.

Datasheet recommends resistor/capacitors need to be removed for unused channels as shown below.

This will result in multiple PCB assemblies to support different systems. Any recommendation to use single PCB assembly to support multiple pack voltage systems ?

Is there any issue if I connect all unused cell inputs together and short to BAT stack voltage(top most cell) in the cable module?

Vasanth,

So you are saying that you would be shorting the top cells to BAT and keep the resistors and capacitors populated for those cells? Yes, that should be fine.

Hi,

Yes, that's correct. So i could use single PCB assembly for cells from 6S to 16S. Just need to short the unused cell connections to BAT.

Yes, we don't expect any problems with that. The capacitors are required for hotplug, but we show the resistors depopulated mostly for BOM cost reasons. If you want to keep all these components, that should be fine.

Hello Alexander, In same thread, my question is what if we keep all resistor & capacitors poulated & short at battery? I understand this should still work. This mean - we do design for 16S & keep resiatance & capacitor netowkr populated but short top unused cells at battery & connect to BAT.

Sorry for the delayed response. Yes, you can keep these populated in your less than 16 cell designs.
