Downgrade BQ34Z100-G1 to BQ34Z100

Part Number: BQ34Z100
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: , BQEVSW

I know that both parts are the same silicone.  I know that it is possible to upgrade the BQ34Z100 to the BQZ100-G1 by downloading new firmware (sluc580.zip).

I would like to downgrade the BQ34Z100-G1 to the older part's firmware.  Why, because I ordered an eval board BQ34Z100WEVM and the silicone was loaded with the G1 firmware, but my production boards are built with the older part and we now need to use a different battery.  So, my plan was to use the EVM to generate a new golden image, but as you can see that won't work, unless I do a field upgrade of the silicone to the G1 firmware.

So, is there a ZIP file with older firmware?

  • Hello Evan,

You can read out the senc file from bq34z100 using bqEVSW. bqEVSW also allows programming senc files into an EVM. This is one option to change firmware.

  • Unfortunately I am unable to connect bqEVSW to a production board.  I can access the BQ34Z100 via the production boards CPU / I2C combination.  For production I use the code listed in "Going to Production with the BQ34Z100.pdf" to write the golden image, which is just the Data Flash area.  To the best of my knowledge information on how read / write the "code" portion of the firmware is not listed on the TI website.

Any suggestions on how to move forward?

  • Hello Evan,

Here are a couple of suggestions

    1. Swap the bq34z100-G1 on the EVM with a bq34z100.

    2. Find the old EVM that was used when designing, then can read out the senc from that and program it to the bq34z100-G1.

  • Swapping the chips really isn't an option.

Finding the old EVM sounds like to only option available at present.

Going forward, if we switch to the -G1 chip is there any thing that would need to change with the design, other than the Golden-Image?  I am thinking about the resistor across SRN and SRP and other external components.

  • Hello Evan,

When you switch to bq34z100-G1, only the golden image will need to be updated. The board can stay the same.
