LM1117: is tantalum Cap on output is must?

Part Number: LM1117

Hi,

My customer would like to check whether use 22uF MLCC CAP on output is acceptable?

or Tantalum CAP is must?

  • Hi Jim,

The minimum ESR as specified in the datasheet is 0.3Ω, and MLCC caps typically have ESR much less than that. As such, using only MLCC caps may result in the LDO being unstable. An easy solution to this if they want to use MLCC caps is to artificially add ESR by putting a resistor in series with the output caps.

    Regards,
