BQ2980: Battery side Reverse polarity protection

Part Number: BQ2980
We are requiring a Battery protection circuit for our project and the BQ298xyz series suits our application. But our product uses removable batteries and the PCM will be mounted on the carrier board PCB. Please help to reply to our queries.
1. Does this chip has reverse polarity protection if the battery is connected in reverse?
2. Does the circuit automatically turn ON in discharge mode while connecting the Battery for the first time?

  • Hello Elsa,

    1. Does this chip has reverse polarity protection if the battery is connected in reverse?
No, it does not come with integrated reverse polarity protection. You can easily implement reverse polarity protection a few components. You can find reverse polarity circuit examples in many of our EVM's, like the bq40z50EVM(Q4 and R4 in the schematic).
    2. Does the circuit automatically turn ON in discharge mode while connecting the Battery for the first time?
There is no discharge mode. The device wakes up in SHUTDOWN mode (See Section 8.4.1.1 Power-On-Reset (POR) on the datasheet), you'd need to connect a charger to the PACK terminals in addition to the battery to wake the device.

  • Hi Luis,

As mentioned our product uses removable cylindrical batteries and the PCM will be mounted on the carrier board PCB. In this case, we need the system to wake up immediately after inserting the battery. Couldn't find any IC part number mentioned in the datasheet with UV_SHUT disabled. Is it possible to disable the shutdown feature by any method? A default pull down on the pack+ pin is enough for this? Please suggest.

If not possible could you please suggest a solution/ alternate part that can meet our scenario?
