BQ76952: Fuse pin functionality

Part Number: BQ76952

Hi team,

I found this in the reference design oh BQ76952. What is component symbol F1 and how does the fuse pin operate here?

Thank you

  • Hello Mohammed,

F1 is an activated fuse. When the FUSE pin is driven high, the FET Q20 turns on, pulling pin 2 of the fuse to GND blowing the fuse.

  • Hello Luis,

Why is F1 NC, and can you help me understand how this fuse works, I can't find any components like this, can you steer me in the right direction?

  • Hello Mohammed,

This is a self-control protector (SCP), which is a chemical fuse with a third connection, that is internal heater that activates when pulled to ground. In the event that the FUSE pin is enabled, the heater is pulled to ground, generating heat to blow the fuse.

We usually use Dexerials fuses in our EVMs.

This usually is unpopulated in our boards as we do not want it to completely disable board during testing of the devices and systems. The FUSE pin, of the protector that uses it, can usually be measured (if used) in order to know if it will work properly without bricking the device.
