TPS25947: High Quiescent current

Hello,

I am considering this part number for a product our company is designing - The problem we have with it is what seems to be the very high quiescent current by battery protection IC standards (I know this isn't designed specifically as a battery protection IC) - could you give me an explanation for why this current is high (about 420uA) and if there is a way to lower it? I'm sure I'm missing something important but would be very grateful to have it explained to me.

Hi Karl,

We can not control quiescent current. It is because of internal circuitry and I cannot comment much on internal design as it is confidential. How much quiescent current would be fine in your application?

Hi Kunal,

Quiescent current of 150uA or lower would be fine.

We need a chip with - reverse polarity / reverse current / short circuit / over current protection (3A continuous cut off) with an input voltage range of 3 - 20v - I was struggling to find an alternative within the TI portfolio - would you be able to recommend something?

Hi Karl,

TPS25940 is the best device I can think with the above features and lowest IQ . What is the application?

Hi Kunal,

We want to integrate the chip into a primary battery enclosure system - so it protects the battery pack from reverse current, short circuit and the load attached to the system from reverse polarity and over current.

I couldn't find anything similar to the TPS25940 yet.

Thanks Karl. Could you tell why is steady state quiescent current a major concern because generally it is shutdown Iq which is important?

Hi Kunal,

As we understand, and from our testing, the chip uses about 400uA continuously when there is a voltage connected regardless of whether power is flowing or not - so over a period of a month that's about 270mA current consumption which is too much. Is this correct or is there a way to operate the chip effectively in shutdown mode? If that was possible it would change everything.

Hi Karl,

Have you tested when voltage at EN pin is below 0.74V? When device is disabled through EN pin , Iq is in 70uA range.

Hi Kunal,

If we can get it into this shutdown mode will the main protection features still work - reverse polarity, reverse current blocking, short circuit etc?

Hi Karl,

Shutdown mode means device will be off and disabled so no path from IN to OUT. You will only want to go in shutdown mode when their is no load? You are concerned about that 400uA which is there when device is enabled ?
