what is the difference between package code RGY and RHL?

Hi,

TPS54620's data sheet has 2 package: RGY and RHL, I looked at the drawings, looks like all the dimensions are identical between the 2 (unless I overlooked something)

So what is the difference between RGY and RHL?

There is no difference between the 'custom' RGY leadframe of the TPS54620 and the RHL. The 'standard' RGY package does not have the 'wings' you see in teh outline drawings.

TPS54620RGY

Why did the RGY package changed to be identical to the RHL?

I got a design that was created with the original 'standard' RGY PCB footprint.

The RHL package has 2 pins associated with each of the 2 'wings'. What is the impact of not having those 'wings' connected to ground?

The card got designed with the TPS54620RGYR using the original datasheet that showed the RGY package which had the ACTIVE status while the RHL had a PREVIEW status at the time.

The PCB land pattern connects the wing between pins 7 and 8, but for the other wing between pins 1 & 14, it is barely connected to GND at the very best. This artwork did not pose a problem when using the original RGY package which had no wings, but now that the package has wings, we need to know if "both" wings require to be connected to ground for proper operation, or if only one wing connected is acceptable or not.

Also, if the TPS54620RHL and TPS54620RGY are actually the same devices now, will the TPS54620RGY become obsolete ?

They are electrically connected internal to the device and the wing portion is relatively small. can you post your land pattern?

The pin 1 of the TPS54620RGY is on the bottom right side of both pictures below.

If the TPS54620RHL and TPS54620RGY are the same devices now with the same package, will the TPS54620RGY become obsolete as it got replaced by the other one?

If I recall correctly, the RHL is the only package currently in production. However there may be some of the RGY still is stock at various distributors. I generally answer only technical questions. Let me see if I can get a definitive answer.
