BQ4050: Large variation in capacity after cycling

Part Number: BQ4050
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO

Hi team,

Here's an issue from the customer may need your help:

When using the BQ4050, the FCC capacity and design capacity are much different, the design capacity is 5000 mAh, but the 4050 cycle capacity is 4384 mAh. The customer would like to know what will cause this.

Could you help check this case? Thanks.

Best Regards,

Cherry

  • Hello Cherry,

What is the cell manufacturer's capacity specification across different lots?

We will need charge/discharge log files to analyze if the battery capacity is low or if settings are incorrect.

  • Hello,

What is the cell manufacturer's capacity specification across different lots?

The cell capacity is 2500maAh, making a 4S2P battery pack.

We will need charge/discharge log files to analyze if the battery capacity is low or if settings are incorrect.

Due to some reasons they cannot provide the log files, but they have made the following charge and discharge graphs with log file:

16.8V cutoff voltage during charging phase, charge to around 16V SOC has reached 100%, but can continue to charge to 16.8V, discharge phase 11V cutoff voltage, to about 13.5 V to 7% and can continue to discharge SOC no longer falling). Design capacity of the final 5000 mAh, while the FCC is only around 4400, but the discharge cap in the bqstudio interface is around 505050mAh:

Please let me know if this helps. Thanks.

  • Hello Cherry,

The battery parameters must be matched to the actual termination condition. Set appropriate taper values to get correct SOC during charge. I think the mismatch in discharge may be because the battery was charged beyond 100% which is not tracked by gauge.
