BQ34Z100: read 0 V

Part Number: BQ34Z100
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO

Hello
Why does bqstudio read that the battery voltage suddenly changes to 0V during charging? Other reads are normal.

  • Hello,
I disconnect the pin4 input of the BQ34Z100, and then collect 0 voltage. In addition to this, what else will cause the acquisition of 0 voltage

  • Hello Jingming,

Something is most likely disconnecting the voltage to the BAT pin somehow. Please make sure you can also measure the same voltage at the BAT node on the gauge to confirm it's only the gauge or a bad connection.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • Hello,
Customer feedback, when there is no charging, the voltage acquisition is normal. When charging for a period of time, the voltage reading suddenly changes to 0V. What is the general cause of this?

  • Hello,
Customer feedback, when there is no charging, the voltage acquisition is normal. After charging for a period of time, the voltage reading suddenly changes to 0V. After a period of relaxation, the acquisition is normal. What usually causes this?

  • Hello,
    1. My oscilloscope captured the waveform of PIN2[VEN], [VEN] will output a high level every 20S to control [BAT]. Will there be other factors that cause [VEN] to fail to output a high level, and what factors will cause this phenomenon?
    2. Does the voltage reading of the IC depend on [VEN] being turned on every 20S?

  • Hello Jingming,

Can you share a full log of the issue showing the start of charge and how long it takes for voltage to go to 0V.

VEN is used to enable voltage measurements if you are using a voltage divider network. Can you share your schematic if it is a custom PCB? Are you using an EVM?

Were you able to confirm that there is still a voltage on the BAT pin when VEN is being enabled even after the gauge is reporting 0V? We need to determine if this is a hardware related issue or firmware.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • Hello
I have asked the customer to press the VEN button area to verify if there is a hardware problem.
In addition to hardware, what else can cause this phenomenon? I can analyze and verify together here.6305.bq34z100.pdf

  • Hello Jingming,

It is most likely a hardware issue with the VEN and voltage measurement network. Unless the calibration was done incorrectly on the voltages initially, but that wouldn't make sense since some of the voltage values are correct.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • Hello,
I'm also curious that if there is a problem with the hardware, 0 voltage should always be sampled. The voltage is normal at the beginning of charging, and then suddenly becomes zero voltage. In the early stage, VEN should output a high level, and in the later stage, other conditions should trigger VEN to output a low level.

  • Hello Jingming,

The VEN pin should be pulsing every second to take a voltage measurement, were you able to confirm it's pulsing and the BAT pin is also receiving the correct voltage for the full test?

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller
