TPS1H000-Q1: Why is maximum of I(nom) much smaller than current limit?

Hi team,

What's the difference between the maximum of Io,nom and the current limit? Why is Current limit set much higher than the max nominal value of current? 

For example, the internal current limit is fixed and typically 10 A, while the I(o, nom)max is 4A. Does this mean the device could output above 4A?

    First of all, could you double check are you discussing TPS1H000-Q1? The nominal current and internal limit in the datasheet is actually much lower than the numbers you referred.

    To your question, the internal current limit is set higher than the nominal current since it's intended to protect the device from damage. The nominal current limitation is the loss and the thermal, so if you can manage the thermal well (i.e. put heatsinks or have fan blowing on the part), you can run higher current than the nominal current. However, if you are using the part in normal situations (no extra cooling etc.), you should try to keep the current level in the nominal current mentioned in the datasheet. If you need higher nominal current, you should try a lower Rdson device for the loss considerations. Also the current limit should set right above what you think the max nominal load condition is.
