LP55231: Need some help understanding how the Master Fader Mapping works

Part Number: LP55231

Hello,

I am using the LP55231 to drive 9 white LEDs and have a question that I cannot seem to find the answer to in the data sheet.

My question is about if you can use both the master fader registers to control the LEDs as well as the setting individual LEDs using the PWM registers? Or is it a case of once I assign a channel to a master fader it over rides the PWM registers?

From my experimentation I have found that once I set a channel to a master fader I am no longer able to set that channel using the PWM registers unless I change the Master Fader bits back to 00.

My end goal is pretty simple as I just want to create 9 different lighting sequences and was hoping to have 3 master faders to control groups of LEDs as well as being able to use setting the PWM directly for each channel.

For example for one pattern I want to dim up and down all the LEDs at once which makes sense to use one of the master faders to assign all the channels to and then just use one register to control those LEDs instead of having to write to 9 different registers. But now I would have to assign and reassign the master faders every time I would want to use them which I guess I a bit better than having to write to the 9 different registers every time you want I want to increases the PWM. But before I get to deep in to it I was just wanting to make sure I am not doing something wrong.

Is this normal operation? I couldn't find anywhere in the datasheet where it states this information.

It does state that the engine mapping overrides the control of the Output ON/OFF registers but I don't see anything about the PWM registers.

Thanks for the information.

  • Hi Jacamo,

It is normal operation from what you demonstrated on Master Fader mapping which controls over PWM registers. For the 9-LED global dimming up and down, you could manipulate the Master Fader bits to achieve that breathing effects.
