LP2951: Current rating

Part Number: LP2951

Hi Experts,

Our customer has this question:

"The LP2951 is rated for 100mA. Is this due to the current-carrying capability of the die and bond wires, or is it due to the maximum power dissipation? For example, if Vin = 7V with Vout = 5V, could the current capability be increased. Therefore I can use the thermal resistance (97degC/W) as a basis to determine the maximum current.

If this were the case, what is the upper current value the device must not exceed?"

Can you help with the answer?

Thank you.

Regards,

Marvin

  • Hi Marvin,

The current limit specification is 200mA max at 25C and 220mA max over the full temperature range. This is an internal circuit that will prevent more current than the set limit. The 100mA max load current specification is the intended maximum load current, and all of the specifications in the datasheet are based on that limit. The device will function with a higher load current than that, but this is an operational territory that is not guaranteed by design or test to operate correctly and within specification, so it is not recommended to do this. This is also generally true for all of TI's LDOs.

    Best regards,

    Nick
