LM5020: Package thermal center pad connection

Part Number: LM5020

Looking at EVM boards and other reference designs it looks like the center pad must be connected to GND, but this is not described in the datasheet?

So is the pad electrically connected in the package?

Must it be connected to GND?

Is it actually the main GND connection for the IC?

Best regards

Thomas

  • Hello Thomas,

Thank you for posting.  The underpad should always connected to GND pin on PCB.  Inside the IC there is not reliable electrical connection nor reliable isolation, although it has very good thermal conductivity between the die and the underpad.   The main GND is the GND pin itself.

    Hope this clarifies.
