I am looking for battery management system (1s to 14s Supported BMS). Which supports monitoring, balancing and protection. My required specification are as per below.

1.Monitoring: Pack/cell voltage, Pack/ cell current

2. SOC estimation, SOH estimation

3.Monitoring and configuration software supported

3. All protection function supported like: Over charging, Over discharging, short circuit, Overtemperature etc.

Hello Sahil,

There are a couple of parts that come to mind, the BQ76940 with the BQ78350-R2 or the BQ769142/BQ76952 (from the BQ769x2 family) with the BQ34Z100.

The BQ76940 is a AFE monitor/protector that can support up-to 15s configurations (minimum cells required is 9 cells). This IC requires a host in order to enable/disable protections and to work properly. The BQ78350 was made as a companion host for the BQ76940, the BQ78350 also offers gauging using our CEDV gauging algorithm for SOH/SOC calculations. It also is able to trigger and recover the protections of the BQ76940.

The other option is to use the BQ769x2 family of devices with the BQ34Z100-Q1, the BQ769x2 family can support up-to 16s support (with minimum of 3s). The BQ769x2 can work standalone, without an MCU. It can protect and monitor the batteries and current/temperature, a MCU can also be implemented if desired. It does not provide gauging, the gauging most be done on the MCU side, or by using a top-of-stack gauge IC, like the BQ34Z100, which uses our Impedance Tracking algorithm for SOH/SOC calculations.

You can use BQStudio with the BQ76952 and with the BQ76940+BQ78350 in order to monitor parameters and configure settings during evaluation.

Would you please tell me which of these chips i can use for distributed BMS system? In which one can act as master and the others as slave.

my main requirement is buy Complete BMS Board in which one is work as master and one is work as slave board. Can you please help me to select Complete board.

Hello Sahil,

We do not really have such an IC.

The ICs are battery AFEs that can be treated as the slaves by an MCU, as a MCU is able to control and read all of the AFE features. The BQ769x0 family cannot be used without a host for example.

Stacking implementation are also possible where each IC can be considered a slave, but these were not intended and would require additional circuitry. It also would not work with our current gauging solutions for the higher stacked voltages.

So, If I want to buy any BMS (slave and Controller) from your previous suggestion(

BQ76940 with the BQ78350-R2 or the BQ769142/BQ76952 (from the BQ769x2 family) with the BQ34Z100.

) then I have to buy EVM board or any other board(Like launchpad)?. Please give me link what to buy exactly for full circuit board, which I can use directly in my project.

Hello Sahil,

The BQ76940EVM includes a BQ78350 on-board, see it's product page to purchase. This can be upgraded to the R2 version with a firmware update.

There is no BQ769x2 + BQ34Z100 board, you would have to develop your own board.

Hi Sahil,

The BQ76940 EVM (which includes BQ78350) can work stand-alone since the BQ78350 is the controller for the BQ76940.

The BQ769x2 and BQ34Z100-G1 both need a host device, so you would need a microcontroller to talk to each one. You would need to develop your own board.
