LM3914: LCD reference design

Hi Team,

Our customer is using LM3914n-1 Bar/Dot LED and LCD Display Driver and is requesting a reference design (or any document) in which it is used to drive a character LCD. I searched TI reference design library and any related post here at E2E and I found none. Is there anything that we can provide to the customer?

In addition, can you also suggest any character LCD (10x1 or 16x1 or 16x2)?

Hi Marvin,

There is no reference design for LM3914 but datasheet has a lot of schematics for various different applications that customer should be able to use to design their system.

Searching for LCD drivers, I did not see many but some devices that I could come up with are CD5054B/5055B/5056B, MM5452, MM5453, MM5483. Please review to see if any can fit customer application.

Hi Liaqat,

Thanks for the correction. The customer has a follow-up inquiry regarding this device.

The customer would like to use the LM3914 to drive an LCD display to show 10 bars as a progress bar. I know TI does not offer actual LCD displays but can you suggest a specific LCD module that would work well in conjunction with LM3914 (if you know any)? the customer is looking at a 16x1 character LCD and not necessarily a 7 segment numerical LCD.

In addition, the customer is also not sure what is required to use the LM3914 with an LCD. The datasheet shows a potentiometer connected to the input with the outputs of the chip connected to LEDs through a cap. Can this exact setup be used with an LCD?

Hi Marvin,

LM3914 is designed to drive individual LEDs and I do not think it is suitable to drive a LCD display. The only LCD display drivers I could find in my search are the ones I mentioned in my last response.
