BQ25171-Q1: reference design for power bank

Part Number: BQ25171-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25180, BQ25619, BQ25895, BQ24105-Q1, BQ2980, BQ2970
Hi Expert,
I'm an FAE from China Auto Team.
Currently our customer is considering a unusual application. They are developing an application that contains a 3000mAh Li-ion power bank. Now they would like to design circuit for this battery. They use 5V USB to charge this battery. And the battery supply the circuit to work after disconnect from the USB. From my understanding, they need charging and protecting chips from the charging side. From the discharing side, is there any discharging chips applicable? Or the normal buck/boost converter is ok for this situation? Do you have full reference design for power bank? Thanks a lot for help!

Elec Cheng
  • Hi Elec,

The BQ25171-Q1 is a non-powerpath charger so you can connect the converter to the battery directly. Is the converter chip ON while the battery is getting charged?

If you need a powerpath, we have the BQ25180 device where the charging and the discharging path is controlled by the internal MOSFET.

What is the discharge current target?

  • Hi Expert,

The battery parameter is as below. The cell number is one cell.  Please kindly advise suitable charger IC and protect IC. Also if the discharger protect or other circuit, please tell me as well. Could you please recommend two sets of solutions, one is automotive and the other one is non-automotive?

Thanks a lot for your help!

  • Hi Eric,

In power bank applications we often see customers using the OTG feature present in switching chargers such as BQ25619 or BQ25895.

There is also BQ24105-Q1 for an automotive switching charger.

For protector we have BQ2970 or BQ2980.

    Best regards,

    Nick
