TPS27S100: Over 4A DC current causes any reliability issue?

Part Number: TPS27S100

Hi Experts,

On the datasheet, it says the max DC current for recommended condition is 4A. On the other hand, there is no max DC current spec as abs max. I am assuming there is a case that DC current is over 4A. For this case, current limit or thermal shutdown can prevent from device damage. What is the concern if customer uses with over 4A DC current? Does this affect the device reliability?

Regards,

Uchikoshi

  • Hi Uchikoshi-san,

The 4A current is coming from the thermal limit. If customer can manage to get a better thermal performance by lower ambient temp, better board layout, heat dissipation solution etc., then the current can be over 4A. However, if the thermal condition is not improved, customer might see repetitive thermal shutdown. No reliability concern even in repetitive thermal shutdown case, but it might cause the application to malfunction.

    Regards,

    Yichi
