LM5165: Configurable Soft Start

Part Number: LM5165
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS54040A,

Dear TI-Team,

actually we are using the TPS54040A with a Slow Start. The current soft start time is 70ms with a 220nF capacitor. In the datasheet of the TPS54040A it says "The slow start capacitor should remain lower than 0.47 μF and greater than 0.47 nF." In the WEBENCH® POWER DESIGNER the maximum soft start time is always limited to 10ms regardless of the part you are using. So the question is, are there also limitations to the Css of the LM5165? And if so what are the boundaries?

I am looking forward to hear from you!

Kind Regards

Dominik Herbold

  • Hi Dominik,

LM5165 use simple COT control loop, there is no limitation on Css max capacitance, for smooth output ramp up, the minimum Css depends on Cout and load current during startup.

  • Hi Andy,

alright many thanks for your fast response. That helped me a lot! I went through the datasheet several times I hope I haven't overlooked it. Even if parameters don't have limitations I would appreciate to have at least a sentence that says there are no limitations. It's very uncommon that parameters of electronic parts have no limitations :D.

    Sincerely
