Dear Sir,
There is a capacitor connected between pin 4 (VBST) and pin 6~11 (LL), which MLCC size should I choose, 0402, 0603, or 0805?
Best regards,
Genie
Hi Genie,
The bootstrap capacitor used on our EVM is 0.1 μF, 50 V, X7R, 20%, 0603.
However, any size would work as long as 0.1 μF capacitance is maintained after 5V is applied across the capacitor (check DC bias characteristic of MLCC).
Typically customers would choose the smaller size (0402 or 0603, >16V) for reduced cost and ease of PCB layout.
Dear Tomoya,
If I use 0402 size MLCC, how to guarantee its ripple current is within capacitor sepcification when operation?
Best regards,
Genie
Hi Genie,
The ripple current should be minimal in the bootstrap capacitor and not violate the ceramic capacitor's ripple current spec, which is not a standard spec for a ceramic capacitor.
Dear Tomoya,
Understood. Sometimes, we add a resistor in series with this bootstrap capacitor, the same question, how do decide which size chip resistor I can use?
Besr reagrds,
Genie
Hi Genie,
A 0402 or 0603 size resistor with a power rating of 1/16 W is acceptable.
