MC34063A: Question about MC34063AD

Part Number: MC34063A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MC33063A

Hello:

1. Can mc34063ad be replaced by mc33063ad?

2. Operating ambient temperature:

MC34063AD:0℃~70℃

MC33063AD:-40℃~85℃

What is the difference between the manufacturing process and material of the two products?

Is the manufacturing process the same as the material, only different in grade?

  • Hi Jimmy Huang,

Thank you for using the E2E forum.

Both the MC34063A and MC33063A have a similar design with the main difference being the specified operating ambient temperature, like you mentioned correctly.
A replacement of the MC34063A with its counterpart MC33063A is possible and should not cause any problems in the circuit.

Regarding the second part of your question, as both parts have mostly identical functioning and specifications, the manufacturing process and material is very similar as well.
Because of this, I currently cannot tell if the difference in ambient temperature originates from a change in the manufacturing process, or from different validation and testing conditions.

I hope this answer helps you nevertheless.
If you have any additional questions, feel free to add them below in this thread.

  • Hi Niklas:

Thank you for your reply. Here you say "as both parts have mostly identical functioning and specifications, the manufacturing process and material is very similar as well.", My customer wants to know what makes the difference. Are the internal circuits all the same, but are the materials and processes different? Which of resin, semiconductor, wire, etc. does the material difference refer to?

The purpose is to confirm what to do for requality confirmation. If the internal circuits are the same, EMC and other performance tests need not be done again.

  • Hi Jimmy Huang,

    Thanks for your feedback.
I would assume that the internal circuits of both parts are the same.
However, I will check back with Design if there are any differences which would require new EMC and performance tests.

I will notify you earlier next week, once I get the answers.

    Best regards,
    Niklas

  • Hi Jimmy Huang,

    sorry for keeping you waiting.
After going deeper into the design and manufacturing of both parts, I can confirm that all the materials, manufacturing process, wiring and internal circuits are identical.
Therefore, EMC and performance tests made on the MC34063AD should also apply for the MC33063AD and don't have to be recreated.

    Best regards,
    Niklas

  • Hi Jimmy Huang,
