BQ25886: Weeks/Months of running on usb charger-adapter, with fall-back to the batteries

Part Number: BQ25886

Hi!

I've examined the bq25886 charger IC's data-sheet, and searched e2e for a potential answer. The scenario I am trying to find an answer to is as follows.

bq25886 provides power to its SYS pin.

My understanding is that NVDC PowerPath will source this power from either the battery or from the input supply (Vbus), depending upon the depletion-level of the former.

If I were to run the system for a year, while connected to AC mains (via a usb charger-adapter), then disconnect the latter, will it run on the battery pack? In other words, I am concerned about adverse effects on the Li-ion battery pack, after a long period of it being intermittently recharged (by bq25886) to a high level, instead of its charge being periodically consumed.

Put another way: In the _above_ scenario, I'd like the batteries to act as only a back-up. Whereas typical use-cases involve battery-usage, the above may also occur.

Would I, instead, have to use a fuel gauge to disable charging (via CE)?

Thank you for any insight.

  • Hi Arta,

If you disconnect the AC mains, the system will use the battery for power.  I am checking on the ability to use a gauge and will get back to you.

    Charles

  • Hi, Charles!
Thank you for your prompt response! I've already benefitted from your posts, in other threads.

The crux of the question was the impact, of the very long period of intermittent, incremental recharging, on the battery cells' ability to subsequently power the system. From your response, I conclude that the cells will be fine--at least within reasonable expectations.
As such, in my case, there will not be a need for the micro-controller to gauge the cells' capacity.

Thank you again for your timely response. Greatly appreciated!
