BQ28Z610: SREC Programming

We have been informed by our board manufacturer that the bq28z610DRZR has a long lead time and availability is intermittent. They have suggested using the bq28z610DRZR-R1. They program the SREC for us prior to shipment, and informed us that the samples they received would not program with the SREC they have. I had them send me one of the samples to try here. I had the same issue using Battery Management Studio.

When I try to program the gas gauge, I get the message "Program Srec: ROM version is not supported by this tool. Please contact Texas Instruments to get an update." I downloaded and installed the bq28z610FirmwareBundle-0.20-windows-installer.exe file, but still get the same message.

Should I assume that we cannot use the same SREC for both parts due to memory differences?

Hello Jeffrey,

If the firmware version is different, you can program the firmware available on TI.com (the SREC) to the gauge and it should then auto detect the device. The R1 firmware version is an updated version with more fixes and features.

So are you saying I should be able to program a -R1 with an SREC developed for a non-R1?

Tried programming with the default SREC from TI.com, but it gives the same error in BMS. Also tried the default SREC from the bq28z610FirmwareBundle-0.20-windows-installer and got same result. I can read I2C, so I know part is communicating.

Hello Jeffrey,

The first thing i noticed is that you have bqStudio v1.3.86

It is very likely that the older bqStudio version does not know newer hardware. I would recommend that you uninstall the old version and install the newer one.

Thanks. That did allow me to program the SREC. That helps a lot. Should have thought of that myself. Sometimes, it's the obvious things that get overlooked the most.
