Good Day. I have a customer who is working with BQ24600. Please see below his query for your reference. Thank you very much.

I've got a question about the BQ24600.

I would like to charge a capacitor  of 50F. According to equation 8 it is too big. What will happen, if I use the component in this case?

I use the BQ24640 originally, but now I have to find an alternative which is BQ24600. I charge a 50F capacitor. The BQ24600 has a batteries detection. According to equation 8 it is too big for the BQ24600.

I would like to know what would happen if I use BQ24600 to charge 50F.

    Hi Ray,

    The BQ24600 is intended for Li-Ion cells. As such, there is a precharge stage where the charge current is 1/10th of the fast charge current. This occurs from 0 V to 1.55/2.1 or 73.8% of the full charge voltage regulation.

    The battery detection circuit capacitance refers to when the battery (or in your case supercapacitor) is not connected. CMAX denotes the maximum on board capacitance that can correctly go through battery detection. Battery detection is for removable battery packs. So if you do not intend to remove the supercapacitor then battery detection will not come into play.

    Please note I have not tested the BQ24600 for a supercapacitor application and we strongly recommend using the BQ24640 over the BQ24600 for supercapacitor applications.
