TPS74301: Current Limit

Part Number: TPS74301

Hello

In the datasheet of TPS743xx (Revised August 2010) there is the following section:

INTERNAL CURRENT LIMIT

The TPS743xx features a factory-trimmed, accurate current limit that is flat over temperature and supply voltage. The current limit allows the device to supply surges of up to 1.8A and maintain regulation. The current limit responds in about 10ms to reduce the current during a short-circuit fault. Recovery from a short-circuit condition is well-controlled and results in very little output overshoot when the load is removed.

In the section ELECTRICAL CHARACTERISTICS the current limit is defined as follows:

ICL Current limit VOUT = 80% × VOUT (NOM)  Min: 1.8 A  Max: 4 A

Now I'm a little confused.
Is there a "factory-trimmed, accurate current limit" at 1.8A or is it somewhere between 1.8A and 4A?
Or will it drop to 1.8A after 10ms, while before it may be up to 4A?
How do I need to interpret these information?

Thank you for your help

Kind regards

Reto

  • Hello Reto,

The correct way to interpret this spec is to assume that the current limit could vary between 1.8A and 4A across devices. It is a bit odd that a trimmed parameter has such a large variation in spec, but this device is relatively old, and at this time, we do not have too much information on it. Please assume that the current limit could vary between 1.4A and 4A. Thanks!
