For context we're using the BQ4080 in a 5s external removable battery with a host controller (mcu). We have a self discharge functionality where after some set time (~14 days) if the battery is unused and cells are above the manufacturer's recommended storage voltage, the mcu will enable a circuit that discharges the pack until cells are at or below the recommended voltage, in order to optimize cell health.
I saw that the gas gauge has a similar feature in cell balancing, where it can discharge one or more cells at will. Our question is: can we manually enable the internal cell balancing circuit for all cells even if the cells are balanced, in order to self-discharge the pack? This would allow us to eliminate a redundant circuit.
